Clay Center Announces 16th Annual Carnaval: “The Art of Illusion” to be Held on January 30, 2027
CHARLESTON, WV (October 15, 2026) – The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences of WV is excited to announce its 16th annual fundraising gala, Carnaval. Themed “The Art of Illusion,” the event will take place on Saturday, January 30, 2027, from 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM at the Clay Center, with an exclusive VIP opening reception beginning at 6:30 PM.
Guests are invited to step into a world where imagination takes center stage, and nothing is quite as it seems. “The Art of Illusion” will transform the Clay Center into an evening of wonder, creativity, and discovery, featuring lavish décor, exceptional food and drinks, live entertainment, and unexpected experiences throughout the venue.
“Every year, Carnaval gives us the opportunity to imagine what’s possible when creativity and generosity come together,” says Rebecca Gillispie, Interim President & CEO of the Clay Center. “The theme ‘The Art of Illusion’ perfectly captures the sense of wonder and discovery that is at the heart of the Clay Center.”
Carnaval 2027 is co-chaired by Lindsey McIntosh and Bobbie Spry, who are leading a dedicated group of community volunteers called the Friends of Clay Center in bringing this year's celebration to life.
“Carnaval is a special event because it truly represents what can happen when a community comes together around a shared belief in the importance of the arts, sciences, and education,” says McIntosh. “Bobbie and I are honored to serve as co-chairs and work alongside the Friends of Clay Center Carnaval Committee. We can't wait to see the vision come to life.”
The Friends of Clay Center Carnaval Committee is a group of community volunteers who come together to help make Carnaval possible. Working closely with the Clay Center team, committee members contribute their time, talents, and connections to help shape the event—from developing the evening's theme and experiences to supporting sponsorship efforts and helping create an atmosphere guests will remember.
“The magic of Carnaval doesn't happen with one person or one organization—it happens because so many people are willing to contribute their time, creativity, and energy,” says Spry. “This incredible group of volunteers has come together with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and a shared commitment to making this a special evening for our community. We are excited to welcome guests to an experience that celebrates the Clay Center while supporting the programs and opportunities it provides throughout the year.”
Their collective efforts are an important part of Carnaval's success and demonstrate the broad community support behind the Clay Center's mission. Together, the committee, event leadership, sponsors, and Clay Center staff work throughout the year to create an event that is both an unforgettable celebration and a meaningful investment in the future of the arts and sciences in West Virginia.
Over the last 15 years, this event has raised over $2.3 million. Supporters like The Ruth & J O Stone Foundation – Carnaval’s Presenting Sponsor – have returned to show their support year after year.
“Carnaval is a huge help in raising money for the Clay Center’s arts and STEM programs that touch the lives of thousands of students and families in West Virginia every year. When folks support this event, they’re playing a part in inspiring the next wave of innovators, explorers, and creators,” says Jason Hall, Vice President of The Ruth & J O Stone Foundation Board. “We are proud to be part of an evening that brings our community together while helping the Clay Center continue its important work.”
Gillispie said, “We are incredibly grateful to Lindsey, Bobbie, the Friends of Clay Center, The Ruth & J O Stone Foundation, and everyone who is helping bring this year's celebration to life. Their dedication makes it possible for us to create an extraordinary evening while raising critical support for the experiences we provide to children, families, and communities across West Virginia.”
