Jazz & Jambalaya is Back!
WV Hall of Fame’s Bob Thompson & NYC’s Brass Queens to Headline for the Return of Jazz & Jambalaya to the Clay Center on April 11
CHARLESTON, WV (February 18, 2026) - The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences of West Virginia will bring the flavors and sounds of New Orleans to Charleston with Jazz & Jambalaya, set for Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM in the Susan Runyan Maier Sculpture Garden. Co-presented by Friends of Clay Center and African American Philanthropy in Action, the event invites guests to enjoy live music, dancing, and delicious low-country cuisine prepared by 1010 Bridge Restaurant and Catering in a lively jazz club atmosphere.
A predecessor of the Clay Center’s Cecil I. Walker Jazz Series, Jazz & Jambalaya has welcomed enthusiastic crowds in past years for evenings that blend vibrant jazz performance, Southern-inspired food, and community celebration.
Headlining this year’s event is Brass Queens, a Brooklyn-based, female-led brass band known for high-energy performances inspired by the New Orleans brass tradition. In addition to the headlining act, acclaimed pianist and West Virginia Hall of Fame alum Bob Thompson will take the stage for a special performance. Thompson, a celebrated West Virginia musician recognized for his dynamic jazz interpretations and engaging stage presence, has previously performed at venues across the world, including Washington, DC’s Blues Alley and the legendary Blue Note in New York City. Together, these performances promise an unforgettable evening filled with bold musicianship, infectious energy, and the vibrant spirit of New Orleans.
While it’s sure to be a fun night out, organizers emphasize that this year’s event will also have a greater impact.
“Jazz & Jambalaya is more than just music and food; it’s a cultural celebration and a chance to come together and enjoy the company of friends old and new,” said Melvin Jones, president of African American Philanthropy in Action, a giving circle.
Jones added that he’s glad to be revitalizing this event with Friends of Clay Center.
This year, the event is co-chaired by Friends of Clay Center members Lindsey McIntosh and Mackenzie Mize, who are excited to bring a fresh, festive energy to this year’s celebration.
“Jazz & Jambalaya is one of those nights where the community truly comes together to celebrate music, culture, and the mission of the Clay Center,” said Lindsey McIntosh, event co-chair. “We’re excited to welcome guests back for an unforgettable evening filled with incredible entertainment and meaningful impact.”
“We want people to come ready to dance, connect with Charleston’s jazz heritage, and experience something special,” added Mackenzie Mize, event co-chair. “From the music to the atmosphere, this event is sure to capture the spirit of New Orleans while supporting programs that make a difference right here in the Kanawha Valley.”
They hope the partnerships created through this event honor the rich history of jazz in the Capitol City, which saw the power of music thrive in areas such as the now-gone Triangle District. While segregation was still officially law in the early 1900s, WV Public Broadcasting reports that Charleston’s night clubs were a “melting pot” that brought people together.
McIntosh and Mize noted that, while many notable jazz musicians have come and gone from Charleston, the ability for jazz to bring the community together has persisted.
