Clay Center Invites Families to Museum-Wide Celebration of Art and Creativity

CHARLESTON, WV (August 9, 2026) – The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia is excited to invite families to a museum-wide celebration of creativity and artistic engagement during Art Takeover on September 5th from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Included with museum admission, Art Takeover will transform the entire museum into a vibrant working art studio. Throughout the event, professional artists will create artwork in live studio spaces, allowing visitors to observe the creative process, ask questions, and engage directly with working artists rather than simply viewing finished pieces.

Guests of all ages are also invited to become artists themselves through a variety of hands-on activities located throughout the museum. Visitors can contribute to a collaborative community mural project in the large gallery, create cyanotypes with artist Drew Gornik in the Susan Runyan Maier Sculpture Garden, design collage buttons in the Makerspace, build sea-themed cardboard sculptures in the ticketing lobby, and participate in a still life drawing activity in the small gallery. Participants in the still life activity will even have the opportunity to have their artwork displayed at the Clay Center's art booth during FestivFall. 

Whether you're an experienced artist or trying something creative for the first time, Art Takeover offers an inspiring afternoon of hands-on artmaking, live demonstrations, and creative discovery for visitors of all ages.
