Stories are Made, Loop by Loop: Contemporary Rug Hooking with Fabric, Yarn, and Plastic

MARCH 8–JUNE 20, 2024

Using the rhythmic process of rug hooking, artists in this exhibition tell personal stories of motherhood, healing, and environmentalism. The artists use a variety of materials, from traditional wool fabric to recycled plastics, pulling strips through an open weave fabric to create a decorative surface design with loops, pile, and texture. Rug hooking is steeped in generations of resourceful, creative, and out-spoken makers. These artists work the technique’s simple, repetitive motions by hand, one loop at a time. Through this exhibit we invite you to explore a unique form of storytelling.

This traveling exhibition was organized by guest curator, Susan Feller.

This exhibition is supported by The Elliot Family Foundation, Daywood Foundation, Herscher Foundation, Inc., Charles & Mary Fayne Glotfelty Foundation, and Bernard H. & Blanche E. Jacobson Foundation.
