Clay Center Garden

Enjoy the great outdoors in our Clay Center educational gardens. Gardens open during regular gallery hours, included in gallery admission which is free for members! This year there’s more fun growin’ on in our garden than ever before! Be sure to visit our new Turtle Town exhibit area, where you can observe our box turtles in action (or inaction). You might even catch a special turtle feeding. In the vegetable garden area, Piedmont Elementary School students have planted everything from tomatoes to cucumbers to peppers.

The pollinator garden is budding and ready to receive winged guests.  This garden was planted by our After School Explorers Club and features a selection of native plants which attract our nectar-loving friends. In August 2011, the garden received certification as a Monarch Waystation, providing nourishment for monarch butterflies (and other nectar-loving creatures) in their travels.

Our vegetable garden focuses on organic practices and has a
wide variety of veggies! This garden was created by Clay
Center staff in partnership with Piedmont Elementary students. It’s a great way to learn about taking care of our environment and healthy eating. All produce is donated to the Manna Meal soup kitchen. We donated over 250 pounds of food in 2012, and we’re hoping to break that record this year!

Our garden project received a 2012 Youth Garden Grant Award from the National Gardening Association and has now received a community award from Kroger for community involvement in 2013. The Clay Center Gardens have also been added to Charleston’s East End Garden Showcase, so stop by as you tour the neighborhood gardens, June 15 - 30!
