New and exciting workshops for adults this spring at the Clay Center

(Charleston, W.Va.) 3/2/10 – You don’t have to be a child to take part in the fun and learning at the Clay Center. The spring line-up of adult workshops starts this month with all-new classes. With everything from drawing and jewelry making to beer tasting, there is bound to be a topic for everyone.

Spring adult workshops include:

• Figure Drawing, Tuesday evenings, March 9, 23 and 30, 6 to 8 p.m. – Join instructor Robin Hammer and learn to draw from a live (clothed) model while utilizing a variety of artistic media. All skill levels are invited, from the beginner to the more advanced hoping to brush up on their skills. Registration is $25 for Clay Center members and $35 for non-members.
• The Art and Science of Beer, Saturday, March 13, 1 to 5 p.m. – Join local beer expert Rich Ireland for an afternoon of fun and learning! In addition to learning about beer ingredients, styles and the brewing process, participants will learn about the fascinating history of beer. And, of course, there will be tasting and evaluation of a variety of beers. Registration is $35 for Clay Center members and $45 for non-members.
• Jewelry Making, Saturday, March 20, 1 to 5 p.m. – Local artist Connie McColley will instruct participants in this beginner class, covering basic wire beading, making jump rings and ear wires using sterling silver wire with glass or semi-precious stones. Registration is $55 for Clay Center members and $65 for non-members.
• Ceramics II, Tuesdays, April 6, 8 and 13, 6 to 8 p.m. – This three-evening workshop with WV State University professor Molly Erlandson will focus on the basics of hand-building, using slab and molding techniques with earthenware clay. This workshop is designed for beginners or those with some experience. Ceramics I is not required. Registration is $55 for Clay Center members and $65 for non-members.
• Watercolors, Saturday, May 29, 1 to 5 p.m. – Charleston artist Betty Warner returns with an all-new workshop for adults focusing on color and composition of watercolor painting. This workshop is appropriate for beginners as well as for those with some watercolor experience. Registration is $25 for Clay Center members and $35 for non-members.
• Art & Science of Wine I, Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 1, 3, 8, 10, 15 and 17, 6 to 8 pm each session – Culinary Institute of America (CIA) Certified Wine Professional Sam Uppala will conduct this six-class session, exploring the classic varietals Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. A challenging course intended to be a great deal of fun for the beginner or experienced wine lover. Registration is $125 for Clay Center members and $150 for non-members (price includes all six sessions).
