Grammy-winning songwriter Don Henry to perform live at Clay Center March 20

(Charleston, W.Va.) 3/3/10 – Grammy-winning artist Don Henry’s songs have been recorded by such greats as Ray Charles, Patti Page and Conway Twitty. This widely-acclaimed singer-songwriter will perform in the Clay Center’s Walker Theater as part of the Woody Hawley Concert Series on Saturday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. The opening performers are Kate Long and Robin Kessinger.

A Nashville music veteran, Henry is also a skilled producer and engineer. As a performer and sideman, he’s shared stages with such performers as Ray Price, Emmylou Harris, David Crosby, Michael McDonald and Faith Hill. He co-wrote the 1991 Grammy winner for best country song, “Where’ve You Been,” a huge hit for Kathy Mattea. He also won song of the year honors from the Academy of Country Music, the Country Music Association and the Nashville Songwriters Association International.

Billboard magazine selected Henry’s 1991 debut, Wild in the Backyard, as one of the year’s top ten albums. Rolling Stone subsequently profiled Henry in its “New Faces” column. Other rave reviews came from Entertainment Weekly, Stereo Review, The Gavin Report and several major newspapers.

Audiences at Henry’s shows are often moved to laughter or tears, and sometimes both at the same time. His unique perspective is expressed in instantly memorable melodies and smart arrangements that appeal to listeners across all musical borders.

The Woody Hawley Concert Series brings celebrated singers and songwriters from all over the country to perform in the Clay Center’s Walker Theater, which is transformed into an intimate-cabaret-style venue for these performances. Each show opens with a talented local musician.

Artistic Director Ron Sowell brought the series to the Clay Center in 2005 after it outgrew its original home at the Unity Church of Kanawha Valley. Pastor Woody Hawley, before his death, inspired Sowell to start a concert series to feature renowned musicians as a service to the local community.

This performance is sponsored by Phil and Pam Goodwin.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Call 304-561-3570 or visit www.theclaycenter.org for more information.
