Clay Center to celebrate 7th anniversary with annual Summer Fun Day event

(Charleston, W.Va.) 6/28/10 – Visitors can enjoy a day of fun and entertainment as the Clay Center and West Virginia Symphony Orchestra celebrate the seventh annual Summer Fun Day on Sunday, July 11 from noon to 5 p.m. This family event features free gallery, film and planetarium admission, live performances and other entertainment.

To commemorate the seventh anniversary of the grand opening, the Clay Center invites guests to explore the Avampato Discovery Museum, enjoy activities and games and register for prizes. In the grand lobby, families can test their musical talents with an instrument petting zoo provided by Gorby’s Music, Inc. A free Clay Center birthday cake will also be available in the classrooms at 2:15 p.m.

Musical performers will provide live entertainment for all ages. Free concerts take place in the performance hall during the following times:

• 1:15 p.m. – Ron Sowell and friends
• 3 p.m. – BrownChicken BrownCow String Band

Families can also catch a giant screen film or planetarium show in the ElectricSky™ Theater. At noon and 2 p.m., trace the history of rocketry with planetarium show “Rocketmen: A Brief History of Rocketry.” Travel to the blue waters of the south Pacific with giant screen film “Coral Reef Adventure,” showing at 1, 3 and 4 p.m. Seating is limited – check with the box office that day for availability.

Two different exhibitions will be on display in the art gallery. Wildly Wonderful and Wonderfully Wild, an exhibit entirely organized by the art classes of Charleston Catholic High School, showcases works of artists from West Virginia or works inspired by the Mountain State from the Clay Center’s Permanent Collection. Art, Nature, and the American City displays some of the finest paintings from major American representational art movements over a 115 year period.

Embassy Suites-Charleston will be selling a variety of summer favorites throughout the day. Visitors can stop by one of the food stations and make their own fruit skewers, chicken tacos, strawberry shortcakes and more.

This event is the Clay Center’s gift to the community for its continued support. Summer Fun Day is sponsored by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 466, Coca Cola, and Deborah Carper Community Fund. Many businesses and community organizations have also contributed to the event. For more information, visit www.theclaycenter.org or call 304-561-3570.
