25th annual McClaugherty Raffle winners announced
(Charleston, W.Va.) 3/31/10 – Once again, the annual McClaugherty Raffle for the Clay Center and the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra was a huge success. The fundraiser raised approximately $56,000 to be divided equally between each organization. The drawing party took place Tuesday, March 30.
Thanks to the efforts of nearly 100 volunteers, coordinated by event chairs Erin Brewster, Kate McCoy and Danielle Waltz, 790 tickets were sold.
April and Walter Moore purchased the $20,000 grand prize-winning ticket from Clay Center Board member Ed Maier. Walter Moore said he has participated in the raffle in the past but never expected to win. For him, it was more about donating to a special cause.
“What’s interesting is that Ed calls me and says, ‘Walter you won! You won the grand prize!’ and my wife was telling me to get off the phone because we were eating dinner at the time. So I said, ‘Ok Ed, I have to go! I’ll talk to you tomorrow about it.’ I can only imagine what he must have been thinking,” said Moore. “Ed was all pumped up and excited, and I came across that I didn’t care. It just hadn’t sunk in yet. I’m not very lucky at all. After it sinks in, you think about different things you can do – maybe reinvest into a charity or something.”
Moore said he will definitely purchase tickets for the McClaugherty Raffle next year, and he is even looking at ways he can reinvest part of his winnings back into the Clay Center.
“These contributions are never made with the idea of winning something. They are made with the idea of making a contribution to make things better for somebody else – a charity or something that everybody can enjoy.”
